Elmwood Avenue is getting a well-deserved face lift this year.

Current Projects

Elmwood Avenue 2025

New curbs have been completed.

The crew is currently installing new sidewalks.

Next is the paving!

Upgrades

The Village has been phasing out the green garbage cans, replacing them instead with more attractive receptacles for trash and recyclable containers. These cans are now on Mill Street near the school, in front of the municipal building, on Smith Street, and on Belden Avenue.

For many years, our sidewalk plow had been removing the top slab at the corner of Sergeant Street and Central Avenue. The top slab has now been removed and lowered. We also widened the sidewalk and built a retaining wall to prevent the lawn from sliding onto the sidewalk.

Finished Improvement Projects

Sidewalks and Pavement Renovations

We replaced a section of sidewalk at the corner of Sergeant Street and Curtiss Avenue. The sidewalk was in bad shape and the newer section was installed too low, collecting water and debris. It was practically unusable. We replaced the broken sections and replaced the low sections too.

Sidewalks and Pavement Renovations

For the better part of 20 years, the parking lot at the West Main Street Commercial Plaza has been an embarrassment. At the insistence of the Village, the owners of the plaza managed to secure the funding to repave the majority of the parking lot.

We gave some much-needed attention to the drainage on State Street. Installing new catch basins and several hundred feet of new pipe. Drainage work and gutter curbing were completed in 2020 and pavement work was finished in 2021.

RG&E recently acquired the former Agway building on the corner of Green and Belden. The old structure was demolished to make way for a new electric substation. When completed, this corner will be pleasantly landscaped.

Our old sodium vapor street lights were owned by RG&E and were costing us a fortune in rental fees and energy use. The Village purchased the old street light fixtures and hardware from RG&E, and replaced them all with LED lights. The quality of lighting has improved, and monthly charges have been reduced by 65%!

The Village gave Mill Street a complete makeover. In 2016, a new sidewalk was installed the length of the street on the west side. In 2017 - 2018 work was completed on the underlying water system. The project included the installation of new curbing and new blacktop. This phase of the work replaced the street surface from Main Street to the Mill Street Extension. Replacement of the sidewalk on the east side of the street was also completed. In 2020, we had the drainage on lower Mill Street upgraded and the pavement all the way to the school’s driveway was completed.
In 2021 we added striping and replaced worn street signs.

Sidewalks and Pavement Renovations

For more than 60 years, the railroad crossing on Maple Avenue has been problematic. The Village partnered with the Ontario Midland Railroad, supporting them in their quest for State and Federal grants to get this crossing updated. The Railroad worked with State and Federal agencies that awarded grants for this project. In 2020, the work was done. Three rails have been reduced to a single rail. Sidewalks have been provided on both sides of the street where none were before. Safety gates have been installed for both car and pedestrian traffic.

Sidewalks and Pavement Renovations

Work was completed on Union Street for serious rehabilitation in 2021. We have replaced water service lines between the main and curbside shutoffs, replaced aging drainage basins, installed new curbs and pavement.

Demolition Projects

The derelict property known as the Sodus Hotel was recently acquired by the Wayne County Land Bank and demolished. Environmental remediation studies have been completed.

The sidewalk and crossing at Maple Avenue and Smith Street were in a state of disrepair. When the Village dug up the street in order to replace a water valve, repairs were also made to the sidewalk.
